Tuesdays with … May 9, 2016

Here’s your Tuesdays with…. update for those in need of a kidney transplant and their advocates. You could use the following information and email to family members, friends and post on your Facebook page and other social media outlets. You could also include additional information about your health, progress and other activities. If this is your first Tuesdays with… update, click here to learn how to use Tuesdays with… to expand on your Kidney Kampaign.

Do you need help with your Kidney Kampaign? Don’t know how to get others to help? Schedule a brain storming session at your house. Invite friends and family members click here to see a list of ideas. Provide everyone with a copy of a list, but only include a few ideas. Let the group get creative. If the group needs help coming up with more ideas you could always suggest another and ask: “what do you think of this?”

You could start the session by providing some information about living donation so they are able to let others know about your reasons for pursuing a living donor:

  • A kidney from a living donor lasts on average twice as long as one from a deceased donor. For me the wait for a deceased donor is ___ years. (Here's a link that will take you to a site that lists ALL transplant centers and their wait times. You could find your hospital. Search for any transplant hospital by State, top left on the page and then by center. Select the "New Format" under the "View Report" column, the information you are looking for will be on page #11.)

  • It would be great if I could avoid being on kidney dialysis or minimize my time on dialysis. The longer someone is on dialysis the outcomes are negatively impacted.
  • You could discuss what makes a donor incompatible and information about paired exchanges. Here are a few links that will help you with this info. You could provide copies for those who are attending.

Here’s the text for your email:

I’ve scheduled a brain storming session at my house on (include the day and time). I’m inviting a small group of friends and family members to help me develop some ideas on how I could let others know about my situation. I would really appreciate it if you could attend.

(You could also provide some information about your health, dialysis, your energy level, something you and your family are doing together or an experience you’ve had at the transplant hospital.)

Please RSVP. Thanks

Can you suggest another way to let others know about your need? Please share it with us by Clicking Here and we will include in in a future Tuesdays With... update.

If you know someone else in need of a kidney transplant or would like to pass this on to your doctor or a dialysis/transplant social worker please provide him or her with this link:
