Tuesdays with … June 27, 2016

Here’s your Tuesdays with…. update for those in need of a kidney transplant and their advocates. You could use the following information and email to family members, friends and post on your Facebook page and other social media outlets. You could also include additional information about your health, progress and other activities. If this is your first Tuesdays with… update, click here to learn how to use Tuesdays with… to expand on your Kidney Kampaign.

The  “National Organ Transplant Act” (NOTA) allows for donors to be reimbursed for lost wages and travel expenses, but doesn’t allow for donors to be paid for donating.

(If you have the ability to reimburse a donor you should include that here. Or if you plan to have a fundraising event to raise money you should express that here too.)

A new Bill was presented in Congress, “Organ Donation Clarification Act of 2016” https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/5344/text It clarifies some issues and provides for pilot programs that will financially reward organ donation and that offering and accepting such benefits are not criminal acts.

There are other ways to increase the number of living donor transplants while protecting living kidney donors.

onors should receive lifetime health insurance (at least a medigap type program,) and an additional program to cover lost wages (and those of their caregiver), free psychological counseling if they need it and job security. They need these in addition to reimbursement for travel and lodging.

Here’s an article that describes the kind of support I think is needed for living kidney donors.

(You could also provide some info about your health, dialysis, your energy level, something you and your family are doing together or an experience you’ve had at the transplant hospital.)

I am very grateful for the continued support I’m receiving from family members and friends and will continue to keep you up to date on my progress.

Can you suggest another way to let others know about your need? Please share it with us by Clicking Here and we will include in in a future Tuesdays With... update.

If you know someone else in need of a kidney transplant or would like to pass this on to your doctor or a dialysis/transplant social worker please provide him or her with this link:
