Tuesdays with … July 21, 2014

Here’s your Tuesdays with…. update for those in need of a kidney transplant and their advocates. It is a short one this week. You could use the following information and email to family members, friends and post on your Facebook page and other social media outlets. You could also include additional information about your health, progress and other activities. If this is your first Tuesdays with… update, click here to learn how to use Tuesdays with… to expand on your Kidney Kampaign.

I was asked the other day how difficult it is to be a match with me. Here’s some info about the matching process.

About one third of those who get evaluated to be a living donor are not compatible with their intended recipient. Here’s a link to an article that describes the matching process and how medical technology and new drugs have made the matching process much easier. www.lkdn.org/LKDN_Matching.pdf
In the past, for donors that were not compatible they were told that they weren’t able to help their friend or family member. About 5 years ago paired exchanges, also call swaps or chains allowed an incompatible donor to help their intended recipient. In short, two or more incompatible pairs swap their incompatible donors. Paired exchanges have the potential of adding thousands of kidney transplants a year. Here’s an article that describes how paired exchanges work. www.lkdn.org/LKDN_Paired_Exchanges.pdf
Let me know if you would like more information about the matching process or paired exchanges.
(You could also provide some info about your health, dialysis, your energy level, something you and your family are doing together or an experience you’ve had at the transplant hospital.)

I am very grateful for the continued support I’m receiving from family members and friends and will continue to keep you up to date on my progress.

Do you have questions about the transplant process but don’t know who to ask? Would you like to hear what questions are being asked by others who need a kidney transplant? Do you have friends and family members who want to help you but they have questions that you are unable to answer? Would you like to learn what others are doing to spread the word about their need for a kidney transplant?

Join us on the LKDN conference call. It’s held every 2 weeks and the next one will be tomorrow, Tuesday July 22nd at 8:00 PM Eastern, 7:00 PM Central and 5:00 PM Pacific time.

The call in number is: 712-432-0390 When prompted, enter access code: 801922#

I’ll make a brief introduction and then open the conversation.

If you want to receive future notices about the LKDN conference call send an email to me at: harvey@LKDN.org and put LKDN conference call in the subject line.

Looking forward to speaking with you.
